After years of waiting, the Madhya Pradesh government has finally released the draft Bhopal Master Plan 2047, a sweeping blueprint to guide the state capital's growth across 1,016.90 square kilometers and 254 villages, aiming for a projected population of 45 lakh by 2047. The plan focuses on sustainable development and economic growth, highlighting a 51-kilometer 'Growth Corridor' and dedicating 3,000 hectares to boost jobs and investment, while also proposing a significant increase in green cover. This long-awaited plan comes after the previous 2031 draft was scrapped in February 2024, leaving Bhopal without an operative master plan since 2005. The Supreme Court of India recently greenlit the publication of this draft but kept a watchful eye, retaining authority over its final approval, especially after concerns about illegal commercial activities in residential areas led to sealing drives by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC). The new plan is built on four core ideas: protecting nature, making rules simpler and citizen-friendly, and encouraging self-reliant economic activities. Now, the draft enters a crucial 30-day public consultation phase, inviting citizens to submit their objections and suggestions by October 25, 2026. This period will be vital in shaping the final version, which promises modern infrastructure like enhanced BRTS and potential MRTS, alongside Transit-Oriented Development and mixed-use hubs to connect different parts of the city and its wider metropolitan area. The outcome will not only redefine Bhopal's urban landscape but also set a precedent for balancing rapid development with environmental protection in India's growing cities.
