India's government has given a key leader in its defence sector, Rajesh Kumar Singh, a one-year extension as Defence Secretary, keeping him in the vital role until October 31, 2027. This unusual move, approved by the powerful Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) just a week before his original term ended, signals the government's strong commitment to continue its push for India to become more self-reliant in defence. Singh, an experienced Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, has been praised for leading efforts to build more things in India for its military (known as Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence) and for bringing important changes to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). His continued leadership is important as India faces ongoing defence challenges, especially with neighbours like China and Pakistan, and aims to spend a massive Rs 7,84,678 crore on defence in 2026-27. Major plans like buying 114 Rafale Fighter Jets and 60 Medium Transport Aircraft are expected to move forward in this period. With this extension, Singh will continue to guide India's defence future, including working on big projects like integrated theatre commands and faster military buying processes. His role will be critical in making sure these large projects and policy changes stay on track to meet India's goal of making Rs 3 lakh crore in defence goods and exporting Rs 50,000 crore worth of defence items by 2029. All eyes will be on how this extended leadership helps speed up India's defence progress and security.
